ACHIEVEMENTS
FOUNDED 2010
Our history and achievements
2010 — Where it began
Wasps started with one U8 team. That small beginning established the foundation for a club that would grow across junior age groups and into senior rugby.
2022 — Recognition for the way we run our club
Wasps became the inaugural recipient of the Mielie van Zyl Trophy, recognising club excellence within Golden Lions Youth Rugby.
The award recognised sportsmanship, teamwork, integrity, conduct and club management—values that remain central to the club we want to be.
That season, 46 Wasps players were selected for Golden Lions Youth Rugby IPT teams, across boys’ and girls’ age groups from U13 to U18.
2023 — Success across age groups
The club’s recorded achievements included:
-
40 players selected for Golden Lions Youth Rugby squads from U13 to U18.
-
U16 winners of the Golden Lions Youth Rugby sevens tournament.
-
U21 winners of the Presidents League.
-
Representative coaching and team-management appointments.
2025 — Two memorable title wins
Wasps celebrated U19 and senior title victories at Hoërskool Bastion.
The U19 team defeated Roodepoort 19–8, while the senior side secured a 30–22 victory, with Luca Biffi scoring the decisive late try.
2026 — A new home and the next chapter
The move to Sandringham High School opened a new chapter for Wasps.
Building our home takes the same qualities we ask of our players: patience, commitment and teamwork. Our focus is on strengthening the club, improving our facilities and welcoming more families into the Wasps community.
Players and achievements we celebrate
Tylor Sefoor — Junior Springbok honours
Tylor Sefoor’s connection to Wasps is a proud part of our development story. He went on to represent South Africa at U20 level and was selected for the 2024 World Rugby U20 Championship.
His journey shows young players what can become possible through continued development, dedication and opportunity.
Luca Trevisan — Italy U20 honours
Luca Trevisan’s progression to international age-group rugby is another achievement for the Wasps community to celebrate.
A tighthead prop from Bedfordview, Luca played for Jeppe High School for Boys and represented the Golden Lions at Craven Week before earning selection for Italy’s 2025 World Rugby U20 Championship squad. He was again selected for Italy’s Junior World Championship squad in 2026.
His journey from local rugby to international competition offers young Wasps players an example of where dedication and continued development can lead. We are proud to celebrate his achievements and follow his progress.
Gabriel Schiffman and Devon Berger — Provincial recognition
Wasps players Gabriel Schiffman and Devon Berger earned selection for the Golden Lions Youth Rugby U15 squad in 2024.
Their stories also show that players do not all start at the same age. Both were relatively new to rugby when they earned provincial recognition—a reminder of the value of encouragement, application and good coaching.
Luca Biffi — A moment to remember
Luca Biffi’s decisive try in the senior side’s 2025 final helped secure a memorable victory for Wasps.
We celebrate moments like these alongside the collective effort behind them: the teammates, coaches, volunteers and families who make a season possible.

A place to learn. A team to belong to.
At Wasps Rugby Club, we want players to grow in confidence, develop their skills and build a lasting love for rugby.
From a child picking up a rugby ball for the first time to a senior player looking for competitive club rugby, our purpose is to create opportunities to learn, contribute and belong.
Founded in 2010 with a single U8 team, Wasps has grown to include junior and senior rugby. Today, our home is Sandringham High School in Johannesburg, and we are proudly affiliated with the Golden Lions Rugby Union.
Our culture starts with how we treat people
Talent matters, but so do effort, respect and the willingness to learn.
We expect our players to support their teammates, respect match officials and opponents, and take pride in representing Wasps. We ask the same of our coaches, parents and supporters.
Our club is built by people who give their time: coaching teams, preparing fields, organising match days and supporting players. Being part of Wasps means contributing to something shared.
Development at every level
Every player arrives with different experience and ambitions. Some want to improve their school rugby. Others hope to earn provincial selection. Many simply want to play, make friends and enjoy being part of a team.
Our approach centres on developing the fundamentals: handling, tackling technique, movement, decision-making and understanding the game. As players progress, position-specific coaching helps them understand their responsibilities and contribute more effectively.
We aim to complement school rugby, helping players return to their school teams with greater confidence and stronger skills.
Coaching with player welfare in mind
We take the responsibility of coaching seriously. Our coaching requirements include World Rugby training, current BokSmart certification and police clearance.
We place emphasis on appropriate technique, responsible preparation and respect for player welfare. Players should feel comfortable asking questions, reporting an injury and telling a coach when something does not feel right.
